Satellite Communications field engineer
BCom Offshore SAL is in the process of recruiting Field engineers based in Beirut to frequently travel for station installations, support and maintenance of satellite earth station systems mainly located in the EMEA region.
Job Description:
Position:
“Satellite Communications Field Engineer” hereafter referred to as “Field Engineer”. The Candidate will be subject to Lebanese labor law rights and obligations, and will be eligible for a monthly basic salary, a generous daily compensation and expenses coverage scheme during missions spent abroad, and a comprehensive private health, travel and personal accident insurance policy. Candidate will be reporting to the Field Operations Director
Conditions of Application:
The position is only open to males, preferably, single within the 23-35 age groups, holders of an Engineering degree (Telecom major is preferable) from a reputable university. Good oral French and very good oral and written English are a must. It is preferable to have some experience directly related to radio frequency, and IT networking.
Functions and Environment of the position:
The Field Engineer is responsible for performing Project preparations, Project pseudo-design, Researches, Site surveys, pre-installation visit Site preparation / supervision and follow up, Site installation, Commissioning Support and Troubleshooting related to VSAT and large antenna satellite earth stations in different parts of the world. He is to be based in Beirut Lebanon and would travel to the different installation areas on typically 1-2 weeks mission durations.
Technical Knowledge:
Although the Field Engineer will undergo periodic in-house, on-site training, and international equipment manufacturer location-based training sessions, he should have a good knowledge of telecommunication principles and applications particularly in:
- satellite communications principles
- digital communications encoding, modulation, error detection and correction, and wireless transmission techniques
- directional antenna theory
- signal amplification, and noise reduction
- theory and operation of frequency spectrum analyzers
The above enables him to have good fault detection, troubleshooting and repair skills. The Field engineer should have a good knowledge of networking, in particular IP routing, and frame relay. He needs to have basic knowledge in electrical engineering notably electrification, grounding and earthing techniques, lightning and surge protection, and basic knowledge of civil engineering notably concrete foundation preparation, structure reinforcement, and static mechanics of metal structures etc.
Organization. Reliability and Leadership.
The Field Engineer should exhibit a high level of organization and coordination skills, be reliable and display the necessary leadership skills to motivate and provide direction for local helping men during his remote site earth station building.
Administrative and communication skills.
The Field Engineer should possess the administrative skills needed in matters such as travel planning (international flights, local transport and hotels booking) He should have the ability to organize, prioritize, and schedule work assignments. A basic knowledge of budgeting his task and bookkeeping is required as he will be in charge of keeping track of his missions’ expenses.
The Field Engineer should have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally (French and English) and in writing (English) enabling him to write clear and concise technical and descriptive documents. He should also have good reporting skills since technical reports are part of each mission accomplished.
The Field Engineer is the representative of BCom in its dealings with customer technical staff, their organizations and representatives. He should have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of customer base. Directly interfacing on-site with customer representatives requires particular skills and tact in dealing with them.
Location of work and working conditions:
Work is normally performed either in the office in mission planning and post-mission follow up stages or in remote sites in countries with poor or no telecom infrastructure during the on-site intervention stages.
Given the nature of the satellite business and customer profile requirements, flexibility with respect to working hours and days is an essential characteristic required of the Field Engineer. The engineer will sometimes need to observe remote sites working hours and week days schedule. This does not deprive him of the right of fair compensation for the non-standard work schedule.
